Favorite to claim top slot role
Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic views McKenzie as "the strong favorite" to be the Bills' top slot receiver to start the coming season.
Analysis: McKenzie, who has had a strong training camp, was among the team's key skill players who didn't play in Saturday's preseason opener against the Colts. Though veteran newcomer Jamison Crowder still could push for an early season slot role with Buffalo, at this stage McKenzie appears poised to be a key cog in the team's Week 1 passing attack, which is line to feature top wideouts Stefon Diggs and Gabriel Davis.

Back at practice
McKenzie (undisclosed) returned to practice Wednesday, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: McKenzie was held out for a few days with unspecified soreness. He's taken most of the first-team slot receiver reps in training camp, but veteran Jamison Crowder is also a strong candidate for the job now that he's back on the field after missing the first week of camp with an unspecified injury of his own.

Misses practice
McKenzie missed his second straight practice Monday with unspecified soreness, Joe Buscagliaof The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Prior to his absence, McKenzie had been off to a strong start in training camp, putting him firmly in the conversation to potentially claim the slot role previously handled by Cole Beasley. Also in the mix for the job is Jamison Crowder, who the report notes turned in a solid showing at Monday's practice. This looks like a job battle that could go either way, but at this stage Buscaglia believes that McKenzie may have an edge "because of the Bills' explosive potential with McKenzie in the…read more

Impressive showing in training camp
McKenzie's growth as a route runner has stood out during Buffalo's first four training camp practices while he sees extra reps in place of injured veteran wideout Jamison Crowder (undisclosed), Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: McKenzie saw limited opportunities as the Bills' fifth-leading receiver last year, hauling in 20 of 26 targets for 178 yards and one score over 15 regular-season games. However, his production included a breakout Week 16 game against the Patriots in which the 5-foot-8 wideout caught 11 passes for 125 yards and his lone touchdown of the campaign. With slot receiver Cole Beasley no longer on the team, McKenzie's head-turning performance thus far in training camp could catapult him ahead of…read more

Staying with Buffalo
McKenzie agreed to a two-year, $8 million contract extension with the Bills on Sunday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: McKenzie was scheduled to hit free agency but instead will stick with the Bills after posting 20 catches for 178 yards and one touchdown to go along with nine carries for 47 yards and another score last season. The 26-year-old primarily worked as a return man and averaged 24.3 yards per kick return and 7.7 yards per punt return in 2021. Emmanuel Sanders is a pending free agent and Cole Beasley is seeking a trade, so McKenzie could be more involved in the offense next season depending on…read more

Gets four touches in playoff loss
McKenzie recorded one reception for a three-yard gain and carried three times for 15 yards across his 16 snaps on offense in Sunday's 42-36 overtime loss to the Chiefs in the divisional round.
Analysis: After busting out for 11 catches and 124 yards from scrimmage in the Bills' Week 16 win over the Patriots while both Gabriel Davis and Cole Beasley were out of the lineup, McKenzie predictably saw his snap counts and targets trend downward in the games that followed. That being said, offensive coordinator Brian Daboll made more of an effort to keep McKenzie involved over the Bills' final two regular-season contests and two playoff games compared to the first half of the campaign, with the…read more

Back to life, back to reality
McKenzie caught one of two targets for six yards and rushed once for three yards in Sunday's 29-15 win over the Falcons.
Analysis: Just as a welcome door opened for McKenzie in Week 16 due to the absences of Cole Beasley and Gabriel Davis, allowing him to post an 11-125-1 line, it shut just as quickly when his two teammates returned from the COVID-19 protocols to play this week against Atlanta. McKenzie should serve in his jack-of-all-trades role the rest of the way, barring injury to one of his teammates higher on the depth chart. While he has a tendency to sneak into the end zone on occasion, he won't be catching 11…read more

Likely looking at decreased role
McKenzie could be in line to see decreased work on offense with Cole Beasley and Gabriel Davis both back from the reserve/COVID-19 list, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Even though Emmanuel Sanders is inactive Sunday with a knee injury, there are still three healthy wideouts presumably ahead of McKenzie on the depth chart, so there's a risk he's relegated back to return duties despite an outstanding effort in Week 16. With Beasley and Davis both out last week against New England, the door was open for McKenzie to log a career game, and he did just that by catching 11 of his 12 targets for 125 yards and a score. Amended NFL protocol will allow the position…read more

Career day in larger role
McKenzie caught 11 of 12 targets for 125 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 33-21 win over the Patriots. He also rushed once for minus-1 yard.
Analysis: McKenzie hadn't been targeted more than three times in a game this season coming in but thrived in a larger role with both Cole Beasley and Gabriel Davis on the reserve/COVID-19 list. He opened the scoring with a three-yard touchdown reception and hauled in a 28-yard pass to set up a fourth-quarter Devin Singletary touchdown en route to career highs in targets, catches and receiving yards. Replacing Beasley this week
McKenzie figures to replace Cole Beasley (illness) as Buffalo's primary slot receiver Sunday against the Patriots, Chris Brown of the team's official website reports.
Analysis: Gabriel Davis (illness) will also miss the contest, while Emmanuel Sanders is returning from a one-week absence due to a knee injury. McKenzie was impressive in a limited role last season with a 30-282-5 receiving line on 34 targets, but he's been much quieter this year with just 11 targets and 38 receiving yards in 12 games, limiting the fantasy appeal in a difficult matchup with New England. Inactive for Monday Night Football
McKenzie (coach's decision) is inactive for Monday's matchup with the Patriots.
Analysis: McKenzie will be a healthy scratch for the second straight game. The 5-foot-8 wideout doesn't play much on offense, but with Marquez Stevenson (coach's decision) also inactive Monday, it's unclear what the Bills plan to do for return men against the Patriots.

Healthy scratch Thursday
McKenzie (coach's decision) is inactive for Thursday's game against the Saints.

Plays through injury, scores TD
Coach Sean McDermott said McKenzie is "fine" after briefly leaving Sunday's win over the Jets due to an injury, Sal Capaccio of WGR Sports Radio 550 Buffalo reports. He caught one of three targets for 12 yards and had two carries for 17 yards and a touchdown.
Analysis: McKenzie returned to the field after suffering the injury, so it doesn't appear to be much of a concern. The 26-year-old played 13 offensive snaps and was one of four different Buffalo players to notch a rushing touchdown Sunday, which was his first score of the season.

Returns to full practice
McKenize practiced fully Thursday after being limited during Wednesday's session due to a shoulder injury.

Limited participant in practice
McKenzie (shoulder) was listed as a limited participant in practice Wednesday, Chris Brown of the Bills' official site reports.
Analysis: McKenzie injured his shoulder catching a punt early in Sunday's season opener against the Steelers. The receiver was able to return to action later in the game. The Bills' starting return man's status for Sunday's game is uncertain at this point. If McKenzie is unable to play, the Bills will need to find a new return man, as McKenzie's backup, Marquez Stevenson, is on injured reserve.

McKenzie (shoulder) returned to Sunday's game versus the Steelers, Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News reports.

Picks up shoulder injury
McKenzie suffered a shoulder injury during Sunday's game against the Steelers, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: McKenzie returned the opening kickoff 75 yards to set up the Bills at the Steelers' 24-yard line. After going up 3-0, Buffalo forced a punt on Pittsburgh's first possession, which resulted in a McKenzie fair catch. He promptly went to the sideline tent and then to the locker room without a jersey or pads, per Getzenberg. Now deemed questionable to return, it'll be interesting to see who the Bills entrust to return kicks as long as McKenzie is sidelined.

Ready for Week 1
McKenzie (shoulder) was listed as a full participant for the third straight day Friday and does not have an injury designation for Sunday's opener against the Steelers.

On track for Week 1
Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott said Tuesday that he expects McKenzie (shoulder) to be a "full go" for Sunday's season opener versus Pittsburgh, Chris Brown of the Bills' official site reports.
Analysis: With that in mind, McKenzie looks on track to turn in three full practices Wednesday through Friday, which should erase any concerns about the health of the shoulder he injured in an Aug. 24 workout. McKenzie is expected to fill a depth role in Buffalo's wideout corps while also serving as the team's top option in the return game.

Gearing up for Week 1
McKenzie was back at practice Wednesday in a non-contact capacity after missing time with a shoulder injury, Mark Gaughan of The Buffalo News reports.

Still hurting
McKenzie, who remains out after suffering a shoulder injury Tuesday, is in-between day-to-day and week-to-week in terms of when he'll return, coach Sean McDermott told Maddy Glab of the Bills' official site.
Analysis: McKenzie also picked up a fine this week for reportedly not wearing his mask in designated areas around the team, so it's been a rough stretch for the Bills' key utility guy. While McKenzie's status is iffy for the team's preseason finale Saturday, he does have two-plus weeks to heal up for the opener against Pittsburgh. He currently slots in as the Bills' No. 5 receiver and top return man.

Injured during Tuesday's practice
McKenzie suffered a shoulder injury during Tuesday's practice and will have an MRI to determine the severity, Sal Capaccio of WGR Sports Radio 550 Buffalo reports.
Analysis: McKenzie had been sitting pretty to secure the No. 5 receiver spot, so the injury could complicate things for the Bills. If it is something that sidelines the veteran, the team would also need to move down the list to find a return man as well, as McKenzie had been deemed the team's top guy to return kicks.

Big game in one-sided win
McKenzie caught seven of eight targets for 72 yards while rushing once for four yards in Saturday's preseason win over the Bears.
Analysis: McKenzie also returned three punts for 51 yards. He's got the top return job pretty much sealed up, but he's slowly proven himself in the passing game during his Bills tenure, and a big outing like Saturday could keep him involved offensively when the regular season begins. In line for lead return role
Bills special teams coordinator Heath Farwell said Thursday that McKenzie is in the "No. 1 spot" to replace Andre Roberts, who went to the Texans in free agency, as the team's primary returner, Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: Brandon Powell and rookie Marquez Stevenson are also in the mix, but McKenzie has the most experience and he filled in behind Roberts last season, even taking a punt return to the house in Week 17. Based on his position in the return game, McKenzie seems like a near lock to make the roster as the fifth receiver. Analysis: McKenzie is strictly a role player, but he's become an excellent chess piece in Brian Daboll's high-powered offense. McKenzie surprisingly had five receiving touchdowns last season after having only one in his previous four years of NFL action. He also added a passing touchdown and a return TD. Headed for free agency
McKenze is scheduled for unrestricted free agency this offseason, Ashley Holder of WGRZ reports.
Analysis: McKenzie finished 2020 with career highs for catches (30), receiving yards (282) and touchdowns (five), despite working as Buffalo's fourth or fifth WR for most of the year. He's generally been an effective role player in his two and a half seasons with the team, catching 75 of 103 targets (72.8 percent) for 744 yards and six touchdowns, plus 28-124-2 on the ground. The Bills probably want to keep him around, but McKenzie might find a bigger role and/or more money if he explores the open market.

McKenzie (ankle) practiced fully Thursday and does not have an injury designation for Saturday's playoff game against the Colts.
Analysis: The Bills have some injury issues within their lethal wide receiver corps, as McKenzie looks to have shaken his issue while Stefon Diggs and Cole Beasley are both questionable for Saturday. It would appear McKenzie and Diggs are highly likely to suit up, while Beasley seems like a true 50-50 proposition. Remains limited Wednesday
McKenzie (ankle) was a limited participant in practice Wednesday.
Analysis: McKenzie was also limited in Tuesday's walk-through session, but at this stage, there's little reason to doubt his availability for Saturday's wild-card round game against the Colts. The speedster usually has a package of plays drawn up for him on touch passes and jet sweeps every week, and McKenzie can also contribute in the return game, as evidenced by the punt he took back to the house in the Bills' blowout win over the Dolphins in Week 17.

McKenzie (ankle) was listed as limited for Tuesday's walkthrough practice.
Analysis: Perhaps McKenzie's ankle is simply sore after he ran up and down the field all afternoon against the Dolphins in the regular-season finale, scoring three touchdowns by the time the rout was over. Notches third touchdown of season
McKenzie secured both of his targets for 31 yards and a touchdown in the Bills' 34-24 win over the 49ers on Monday night.
Analysis: He threw a touchdown pass to Josh Allen on a trick play in Week 10 against the Cardinals, but Monday night, Allen returned the favor with a 23-yard scoring toss to McKenzie in the latter stages of the third quarter. The fourth-year wideout will continue to be used on a handful of offensive snaps per game, particularly while John Brown (ankle) remains on injured reserve, making him much more of a deep-league option and salary-saving punt play in daily formats.

Trickery results in TD
McKenzie caught his lone target for two yards while also throwing a 12-yard touchdown pass to Josh Allen during Sunday's 32-30 loss to Arizona.
Analysis: McKenzie took a reverse-right from Allen with 6:30 to go in the first quarter, throwing the ball back across formation to his quarterback for a catch-and-run that resulted in Buffalo's first points of the afternoon. The Georgia product has just one outing with more than 25 receiving yards on the season, but as evidenced Sunday, he serves a notable gadget role within the Bills offense. Makes one catch count
McKenzie reeled in his only target for a 25-yard score in Sunday's win over Seattle. He also rushed once for a yard.
Analysis: The speedster is far down in the pecking order and hasn't even served as a return man since the Bills added Andre Roberts to the fold last season. The Bills are also employing less jet sweeps this year, which was McKenzie's specialty in 2019 -- he's only rushed five times for five yards in 2020 and the team seems more comfortable letting Josh Allen or rookie Zack Moss try to take it in from up close lately. McKenzie (ankle) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice.
Analysis: McKenzie appears to have picked up an ankle injury during Sunday's win over the Jets, in which he caught both his targets for 14 yards and lost 11 yards on his only carry. There's not yet any reason to be overly concerned about the depth wideout's Week 8 status.

Scores in Tuesday night action
McKenzie secured all four of his targets for only seven yards and a touchdown in Tuesday night's loss to the Titans.
Analysis: The pass probably traveled about three inches, as McKenzie scored on one of his patented jet sweeps. He's a clear sixth or seventh option in the passing game, though he did see a few extra looks Tuesday with John Brown out due to a knee injury. McKenzie remains a fantasy non-factor even with the occasional score, though we imagine he helped a few Brown owners in need of an emergency pickup Tuesday night due to the latter's late scratch.

McKenzie (hamstring) will be ready for Sunday's game versus the Dolphins, Chris Brown of the Bills' official site reports.
Analysis: McKenzie upgraded to full participation in Friday's practice, so he's ready to rock in Week 2. The 25-year-old wideout reeled in all three targets for 17 yards in Week 1, but he played just 16 offensive snaps, so his upside is capped at this time.

Low output in Week 1
McKenzie caught all three of his targets for 17 yards during Sunday's 27-17 win over the Jets.
Analysis: McKenzie is more of a gadget player with a vast toolbox versus anything that can be used for fantasy value, and in this one he was only on the field for 18 percent of the offensive snaps, compared to 63 percent for No. 3 receiver Cole Beasley and 49 percent for rookie Gabriel Davis. Makes roster again
McKenzie survived the Bills' roster cutdown Saturday and looks to begin the season as the team's No. 5 wide receiver.
Analysis: McKenzie eked out Duke Williams and a few others, his biggest assets being he's a good special teams player and that he can run jet sweeps -- a play the Buffalo offense sometimes uses multiple times in the same game -- as good as just about anyone in the league. That said, his upside is about 30 catches for a team with a pretty talented receiving corps led by Stefon Diggs, John Brown and Cole Beasley.

Set for free agency
The Bills won't tender McKenzie, making him an unrestricted free agent, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: McKenzie suited up in a variety of roles for the Bills in the last campaign, playing 482 total snaps, as he accumulated 254 yards receiving and 49 yards rushing. Considering the team could've slapped just a fifth-round tender on the receiver and failed to do so, it's likely that McKenzie will be looking for a new home this offseason. Regardless of which team elects to sign the Georgia product, he'll likely assume a depth receiving role, at best, in 2020.

Analysis: McKenzie played in 15 games in 2019 and served a variety of roles, finishing with 27 receptions for 254 yards and one touchdown while rushing eight times for 49 yards as an effective jet sweeper. The speedster also served on special teams. McKenzie caught all three of his targets for 34 yards during Thursday's win over the Cowboys.
Analysis: The three catches tied a season high, while the 34 yards represents his highest total since Week 5. The 24-year-old actually saw a diminished share of snaps Thursday, as he and Robert Foster essentially rotated duties as the No. 3 wideout, per Sal Capaccio of WGR Sports Radio 550 Buffalo. McKenzie caught three of six targets for 21 yards during Sunday's win over Miami.
Analysis: The crafty speedster was on the field for a season-high 78 percent of the offensive snaps, and for all intents and purposes, he's settled in as the No. 3 receiver right now. That said, the offense runs through John Brown, Devin Singletary and Dawson Knox, so there's not much room for McKenzie to do much more than contribute the occasional change-of-pace touch. McKenzie at least seems to have pushed himself ahead of Duke Williams, Robert Foster and Andre Roberts in the pecking order at receiver.

Analysis: McKenzie and Robert Foster were made active for the second straight week while Duke Williams was a healthy inactive, a situation that could remain fluid for the rest of the season. McKenzie is the team's best jet-sweep option, something the Bills have incorporated into their offense for much more than an occasional change-up play. The problem is, McKenzie is often the decoy on these plays and has no more than four touches in a game all season. He was also used more as a return man last season,…read more

Returns to active roster
McKenzie is back on the active roster Week 9 against Washington.
Analysis: It's essentially been a rotation between McKenzie, Robert Foster and Duke Williams on the active roster over the last few weeks. McKenzie and Foster will get the call in Week 9, with Williams representing a healthy scratch. McKenzie saw a season-high 21 snaps back in Week 7 when he was last active, which he turned into two receptions for 11 yards.
