Completes first NFL season
Walker finished the 2020 season with 32 completions on 56 attempts for 368 passing yards, one touchdown and five interceptions in four games played.
Analysis: Walker, after a successful spell in the XFL, reunited with his college coach Matt Rhule in Carolina last offseason. In his first NFL campaign, the 25-year-old served as Teddy Bridgewater's backup, but got to start with the veteran sidelined in Week 11 versus the Lions. Walker finished with 258 passing yards, a touchdown and two interceptions while leading the Panthers to a 20-0 victory. While that performance supplanted his status as a capable second option, Walker didn't fare as well in relief…read more

Returning to backup role
Walker is slated to move into a reserve role with Teddy Bridgewater (knee) on track to start Sunday's game in Minnesota, David Newton of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Walker received his first NFL start over Will Grier last week against the Lions when Bridgewater was inactive due to an MCL sprain. The fourth-year pro essentially acted as a game manager while Carolina rolled to a 20-0 win, completing 24 of 34 passes for 258 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. With Bridgewater beginning Week 12 as a full practice participant, he looks like he'll be ready to reclaim starting duties Sunday, but Walker should stick ahead of Grier as the No. 2 quarterback.

Holds own in Week 11 start
Walker completed 24 of 34 passes for 258 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the Panthers' 20-0 win over the Lions on Sunday. He also netted minus-2 yards on five rushes, and he fumbled once but recovered.
Analysis: Making what could be termed a quasi-last-minute spot start for Teddy Bridgewater (knee) -- whose status was in doubt until pregame warmups -- Walker acquitted himself very well overall in his first NFL opportunity to open a game under center. The former XFL star displayed impressive accuracy even while keeping his targets limited to just four pass catchers overall. However, three of those were the top wideout trio of DJ Moore, Curtis Samuel and Robby Anderson, who Walker hit for at least one…read more

Gets Week 11 start
Walker will receive the start at quarterback Sunday against Detroit, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Walker came on in relief in last week's loss to the Buccaneers after Teddy Bridgewater exited with an MCL sprain in his right knee. Though the Panthers were hopeful Bridgewater would be ready to go for the Week 11 matchup, Carolina ultimately made their top signal-caller inactive for the first time this season. Coach Matt Rhule will award Walker the start over Will Grier after both players saw action with the first-team offense in practice this week, so Walker may have a short leash if he…read more

Competing for No. 2 role
Coach Matt Rhule said Wednesday that Walker and Will Grier will receive equal reps in practice this week before the Panthers settle on a clear No. 2 quarterback, Alaina Getzenberg of The Charlotte Observer reports.
Analysis: Walker served as the top backup last weekend in the Panthers' blowout loss to the Buccaneers, and he ended up seeing action after Teddy Bridgewater exited with an MCL sprain in his right knee. The former XFL star struggled in limited action against a tough Tampa Bay defense, completing just two of four passes for 12 yards. Though the Panthers are hopeful Bridgewater will be ready to play Week 11 against the Lions, the backup competition between Walker or Grier will need to be monitored closely…read more

Forced into action
Walker replaced the injured Teddy Bridgewater (knee) in the fourth quarter and completed two of four passes for 12 yards in Sunday's 46-23 loss to the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Walker was forced into the fray after Bridgewater was sacked on a third-down play with just over five minutes left in Sunday's contest. With Bridgewater unable to continue, Walker conducted an unsuccessful fourth-down attempt before leading the Panthers on their final offensive drive, which ended in a punt. After the game, it was revealed Bridgewater would undergo an MRI on his knee to determine the extent of his issue. Although some reports suggest the injury isn't believed to be overly…read more

Inactive for Week 9
Walker (coach's decision) won't suit up in Sunday's game against the Chiefs, David Newton of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Walker had handled backup duties for the past three games behind Teddy Bridgewater, even seeing action in Week 8 after Bridgewater got hurt. Part of the reason Walker was active was his flexibility to play running back and receiver while Christian McCaffrey was hurt. Now that CMC is back in the lineup, Walker will shift backup duties to Will Grier for Sunday's contest.

Set for backup duties
Walker will back up Teddy Bridgewater in Sunday's game against the Saints, Myles Simmons of the Panthers' official site reports.
Analysis: Walker has usurped second-year pro Will Grier, who is inactive Sunday, as the No. 2 quarterback for Carolina. The former XFL star has yet to make his NFL debut, but he could be deployed if Bridgewater suffers an injury.

Inactive against Raiders
Walker (coach's decision) is inactive for the team's Week 1 contest against the Raiders, Myles Simmons of the Panthers' official site reports.
Analysis: Walker was battling Will Grier for the backup quarterback job throughout training camp. Though Walker did enough to earn a spot on the roster, Grier beat him out serve as the backup quarterback in Week 1 against the Raiders.

Battling for backup role
Walker remains locked in a battle with Will Grier for the Panthers' backup job, David Newton of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: While Teddy Bridgewater is locked into the starting role, the backup job is still being contested. Walker started strong in the XFL for the Houston Roughnecks before the season was cancelled, posting 15 touchdowns and helping lead his team to a 5-0 record to begin the season. The 25-year-old has never played in a regular-season NFL game, however, and he could have a difficult time vaulting Grier since the team invested a 2019 third-round pick in the West Virginia product. It's unclear if the…read more

Joins crowded QB room in Carolina
Walker is signing with the Panthers, Dianna Russini of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Walker was well on his way to MVP honors in the XFL, posting a 15:4 TD:INT while leading the Houston Roughnecks to a 5-0 record. He previously spent time with the Colts' practice squad from 2017 to 2019, never quite making it to the active roster for a regular-season game. The 25-year-old now joins a crowded QB room in Carolina, where Teddy Bridgewater, Cam Newton (foot), Will Grier (foot) and Kyle Allen all have spots on the roster. Newton likely will be cut or traded soon enough, leaving…read more

Generating NFL interest
The Seahawks, Cardinals and Broncos have all contacted the XFL's Houston Roughnecks to ask about Walker, Mark Berman of FOX 26 reports.
Analysis: Walker and wide receiver Cam Phillips were the big stars of the XFL, leading Houston to a 5-0 record before the rest of the season was suspended. Walker led the league in passing yards (1,338) and touchdowns (15), completing 64.7 percent of his throws while tossing just four interceptions. He previously spent time with the Colts' practice squad in 2017, 2018 and 2019, never quite managing to secure the No. 2 quarterback job. It sounds like it won't be long before he gets another shot in the NFL.
