Placed on PUP list
Smith (undisclosed) was placed on the active/PUP list Wednesday.
Analysis: Smith remains in the middle of contract negotiations with the Bears, which likely explains his addition to the PUP list. He had said Monday that he did not plan to report to training camp this week, and he didn't. The organization will likely come to terms with Smith at some point on a new contract and he will return to the team ahead of the 2022 campaign. The linebacker produced a career-high 163 tackles last season while also adding three sacks, three pass deflections and an interception that…read more

Holding out of training camp
Smith doesn't plan to participate in training camp when veterans report Tuesday due to discontent with his contract situation, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Smith was sixth in the NFL in tackles in 2020 (139) and fifth in 2021 (163), so his case that he's earned a contract extension is a strong one. The Bears have oodles of cap space after trading Khalil Mack to the Chargers this offseason, so they should be able to work something out with one of the league's best on-ball linebackers. Provided his holdout doesn't extend into the regular season, Smith will be one of football's very best IDP options in 2022.

Ordinary performance in finale
Smith notched six tackles in the Bears' 31-17 Week 18 loss to the Vikings, and he ended the season with 163 tackles and three sacks.
Analysis: Coming off a breakout season in 2020 in which Smith posted 139 tackles, he raised the bar even further this year, recording at least eight tackles in the overwhelming majority of the games he played. He's going into the last year of his rookie deal, though the Bears will be able to exercise his fifth-year option, and he'll certainly continue to be one of the first IDPs taken off the board in 2022 drafts.

Will be available Monday
Smith (hamstring) is active for Monday night's contest against the Vikings.
Analysis: Smith logged a full practice Saturday after being limited throughout the week. His presence will be key in trying to slow down Dalvin Cook and Minnesota's potent running game. On the season, the 2018 first-round pick has registered 129 total tackles, three sacks and one interception across 13 games played.

Listed as questionable
Smith (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Monday's matchup against the Vikings.
Analysis: Smith was a full participant in Saturday's practice after previously being limited throughout the week. That's certainly a good sign for fantasy managers, but it's still worth confirming his status ahead of the 8:15 pm ET kickoff. Christian Jones would see a substantial jump in playing time if Smith was eventually ruled inactive.

Smith (hamstring) was a limited practice participant Thursday.

Solid performance
Smith tallied eight stops in the Bears' 33-22 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday.
Analysis: After suffering a hamstring injury in Week 12, Smith was able to start and ended up posting fewer than nine tackles for third time since Week 2. As long as he emerged from this game healthy, he'll likely return to the high-level IDP production that fantasy managers have become accustomed to seeing.

Ready to face Cardinals
Smith (hamstring) is active for Sunday's game against the Cardinals.
Analysis: Smith appeared to be in jeopardy for the game after his only practice activity during the week was a limited session Friday. However, he'll be ready to suit up, and his presence will provide a big boost to the middle of the Bears defense. Prior to suffering the injury in Week 12, Smith had been on the field 100 percent of the team's defensive snaps and logged double-digit tackles on eight occasions.

Questionable after limited practice
Smith (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Cardinals.
Analysis: Smith gave himself a glimmer of hope by fitting in a limited practice Friday after absences Wednesday and Thursday. Smith (elbow) has been ruled out for Sunday's wild-card game against the Saints, Adam Hoge of NBC Sports Chicago reports.
Analysis: It was trending this way all week, as Smith was unable to practice after suffering an elbow injury during last week's loss to the Packers. The third-year linebacker stacked up a whopping 139 tackles over 16 games this year, and he's been notably strong in coverage as well, adding seven pass breakups and two interceptions. Smith (elbow) was listed as a non-participant on Wednesday's practice estimate, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Chicago held a walkthrough Wednesday, but Smith would not have been able to participate in a traditional practice due to the elbow injury he suffered in the regular season finale. Analysis: With just a little over one quarter left of Week 17's game, Smith will need to recover quickly to have a chance of seeing the field once again Sunday, though it is confirmed he is doubtful to return. Should he fail to return to action, he recorded a career-high 139 tackles to go along with four sacks, and he continues to be an elite IDP option who typically has a high weekly scoring floor. Analysis: After posting seven tackles in the season opener, Smith put up another solid but unspectacular fantasy performance. He'll need surgery to correct the matter, but should be ready to play well in advance of the 2020 season. Potentially serious injury
Coach Matt Nagy said after Thursday's 31-24 win over the Cowboys that the pectoral injury Smith suffered in the game "does not look good for him."
Analysis: Smith picked up the injury in the first quarter of the game and was unable to return. Kevin Pierre-Louis stepped in for Smith at inside linebacker and did an admirable job, racking up six tackles (five solo) while helping to slow down an oftentimes explosive Dallas offense. The Bears will certainly miss Smith if he's out for an extended period of time, though, as he comfortably leads the team with 99 tackles on the season.

Ruled out with pec
Smith has been ruled out of Thursday's game against the Cowboys with a pectoral injury, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Smith appeared to injure his chest area while attempting to tackle Dallas running back Ezekiel Elliott on a two-yard touchdown plunge in the first quarter. The Bears' leading tackler looks as though he will replaced by Kevin Pierre-Louis at inside linebacker.

Massive performance
Smith notched a pair of sacks and 14 tackles in the Bears' 24-20 win over the Lions on Thursday.
Analysis: Smith was all over the field, as no other Bears player had more than eight tackles, and he also recorded the only sacks the team was able to generate. He's now posted at least 10 tackles in four of the last five games, and there are few better IDP options at the linebacker position.

Another strong outing
Smith posted 11 stops in the Bears' 17-7 loss to the Rams on Sunday.
Analysis: For the third-straight game, Smith posted double-digit tackles. After averaging eight tackles over the first six games of the season, he's become an elite weekly IDP.

Big performance
Smith recorded 11 tackles in Chicago's 20-13 victory over the Lions on Sunday.
Analysis: Even though the Lions threw the ball 46 times, many of those passes were short, which helped allow Smith pile up double-digit tackles. After a four-game stretch in which he averaged seven tackles, he's now posted 21 tackles over his last two games, and he's beginning to regain the form that he showed in his amazing rookie season, when he was performing as an IDP star.

Notches 10 tackles
Smith posted 10 tackles in Chicago's 22-14 loss to the Eagles on Sunday.
Analysis: In a game that Chicago trailed throughout, the Eagles piled up 35 rushing attempts, helping Smith to post his second-best fantasy performance of the season. After a standout second half of his rookie season, his performance has dipped a bit -- as he's averaging eight tackles but no sacks, making him a solid, but not elite, fantasy performer.
