Re-signs on three-year deal
Thomas agreed to terms with Carolina on a three-year contract Friday.
Analysis: Thomas was scheduled to hit free agency mid-March, but he will instead stick with the team that initially selected him back in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Though the 26-year-old was effectively invisible for fantasy purposes in 2021 -- he posted just 18 catches for 188 yards without a touchdown across 17 appearances -- he did solidify himself as a capable blocker. That said, positional teammate Tommy Tremble could well be the more interesting fantasy option next season.

No looks in finale
Thomas was not targeted in Sunday's 41-17 loss to the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Thomas saw rookie Tommy Tremble return to the lineup and lead him in offensive snaps, contributing to another quiet outing. Despite starting 13 of 17 games this season, Thomas managed just 18 catches on 30 targets for 188 yards and no touchdowns. The 2018 fourth-round pick is slated to enter unrestricted free agency this offseason and he could offer depth to a team's options at tight end. It's unclear whether the Panthers will try to bring him back.

Leads team in receiving
Thomas caught all three of his targets for 33 yards in Sunday's 18-10 loss to the Saints.
Analysis: Thomas paced the Panthers in receiving yards while teammate Tommy Tremble wasn't activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list. His output was fueled by a 21-yard reception on Carolina's opening drive, gaining more yardage on that play than he'd posted in 11 individual games this season. In playing nearly 90 percent of the offensive snaps Sunday, Thomas again would stand to benefit should Tremble remain sidelined Week 18 versus the Buccaneers, but his upside nonetheless is relatively restricted…read more

Could see big snap count
Thomas and recent practice squad call-up Stephen Sullivan are left as the only tight ends on Carolina's roster as Sunday's game against the Saints approaches after Tommy Tremble landed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday.
Analysis: Thomas could be headed for a three-down role, though he's had that opportunity plenty of times in the past and never did much with it. He's also been quiet this season while splitting snaps with Tremble, catching 15 passes for 155 yards in 15 games.

Makes one catch
Thomas caught his only target for five yards in Sunday's 31-14 loss to the Bills.
Analysis: Thomas trailed rookie Tommy Tremble in snaps, but he at least hauled in the only look sent his way. Given his small role, though, the veteran holds little fantasy value ahead of Week 16's matchup versus the Bucs.

Targeted twice Sunday
Thomas didn't catch either of his two targets in Sunday's 29-21 loss to the Falcons.
Analysis: Thomas played one more offensive snap than fellow tight end Tommy Tremble, but the rookie caught both of his targets for 23 yards, again outperforming Thomas statistically. With just three receptions for 26 yards over his last six appearances, Thomas' fantasy value is extremely restricted.

Makes one grab
Thomas caught his only target for seven yards in Sunday's 27-21 loss to Washington.
Analysis: Thomas has now hauled in just one pass in three straight games. In comparison, rookie Tommy Tremble caught two balls Sunday, going for 35 yards. Given his low involvement, Thomas holds minimal fantasy value.

Another one-catch outing
Thomas caught one of two targets for nine yards in Sunday's 24-6 loss to the Patriots.
Analysis: Thomas also recovered a fumble, but he was flagged for a costly unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that pushed Carolina out of the red zone during the second quarter. Through nine games, Thomas has now hauled in more than one pass just twice, evidencing his rather restricted fantasy upside.

Makes one catch
Thomas caught his only target for 10 yards in Sunday's 19-13 win over the Falcons.
Analysis: Thomas saw rookie Tommy Tremble outperform him for the second straight game, but neither tight end is particularly useful from a fantasy perspective. Through eight games, Thomas now sports just 11 catches on 17 targets for 130 yards and no touchdowns.

Blanked versus Giants
Thomas didn't catch either of his two targets in Sunday's 25-3 loss to the Giants.
Analysis: Thomas played 70 percent of Carolina's offensive snaps, but a horrible performance on that side of the ball restricted the output of most players. Even though he usually carries limited upside, Thomas will nonetheless strive for an improved showing while the offense rebounds as a whole in Week 8 versus the Falcons.

Makes long catch
Thomas caught one of two targets for 41 yards in Sunday's 34-28 overtime loss against the Vikings.
Analysis: Thomas was responsible for Carolina's longest offensive play of the day, helping him finish second on the team in receiving yards. The tight end has now posted at least 40 yards in consecutive contests, but considering he's only hauled in more than one pass in two of six games played so far, Thomas isn't getting enough volume even after the Dan Arnold trade to make much of a fantasy impact.

Best outing of season
Thomas caught four of five targets for 40 yards in Sunday's 21-18 loss to the Eagles.
Analysis: Thomas once again played over 60 percent of Carolina's offensive snaps and helped the team with a couple of gains for first downs. With a long reception of 24 yards, Thomas enjoyed his best performance of the campaign, and although rookie Tommy Tremble managed a five-yard touchdown early, Thomas' outing Sunday still offers a slight boost to his fantasy stock ahead of Week 6's matchup versus the Vikings.

Logs three receptions
Thomas caught all three of his targets for 15 yards in Sunday's 36-28 loss to the Cowboys.
Analysis: Thomas no longer had competition from Dan Arnold after the veteran was traded earlier in the week, allowing him to play over 60 percent of Carolina's offensive snaps. Overall though, Thomas' production wasn't too different from his usual output, as he caught a few short passes underneath. Despite now being the nominal starter, Thomas' upside remains restricted by his relatively small role within the Panthers' scheme, and rookie third-round tight end Tommy Tremble could also see his role grow…read more

Makes one catch
Thomas caught one of two targets for seven yards in Sunday's 26-7 win over the Saints.
Analysis: Thomas made a minimal impact in the passing game, but it's worth noting he once again played more snaps than starting tight end Dan Arnold. In fact, with 52 offensive plays compared to Arnold's 22, Thomas was on the field far more than Arnold, but the latter's three catches for 55 yards Sunday evidenced his greater upside than Thomas, who sports just 24 yards through two games so far and has primarily been used as a blocker.

Makes long reception
Thomas caught one of two targets for 17 yards in Sunday's 19-14 win over the Jets.
Analysis: Thomas opened the third quarter with a long gain and actually played two more snaps than starter Dan Arnold, who managed just a pair of catches for six yards. Although Thomas isn't expected to be much of a factor in Carolina's passing game this season, occasional impact plays like Sunday's grab would keep him in the mix for spare looks.

Impressing this offseason
Coach Matt Rhule pointed out Thomas has had a "great offseason" earlier this month and suggested he still has a chance to lay claim to the Panthers' starting tight end role, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.
Analysis: Thomas posted a promising rookie season back in 2018 but hasn't really followed it up with much of note in each of the last two, finishing out 2020 with just 20 catches for 145 yards and a touchdown. The Panthers signed Dan Arnold and drafted Tommy Tremble this offseason to shore up the position, but it looks like Thomas will still get a fair shake for the starting job and he's put in work this offseason to keep himself in the conversation. Disappointing third season
Thomas finished the 2020 season with 20 catches on 31 targets for 145 yards and a touchdown in 16 games played.
Analysis: Thomas was expected to assume a larger role in Carolina's passing game following the departure of long-time Pro-Bowler Greg Olsen, but that simply did not manifest despite Thomas playing about 65 percent of the offensive snaps. In fact, the 2018 fourth-rounder's final production closely mirrored that from 2019, when he experienced significant dips from his promising rookie campaign. Blanked against Washington
Thomas wasn't targeted in Sunday's 20-13 win over Washington.
Analysis: Thomas played 40 offensive snaps, but he failed to receive a target for the second time in five games. The third-year tight end has struggled to generate meaningful production this season despite Greg Olsen's departure, as he's posted a 19-146-1 line through 15 games.

Makes three grabs
Thomas caught three of four targets for 20 yards in Sunday's 32-27 loss to the Broncos.

Active against Broncos
Thomas (knee) is active Week 14 against the Broncos.
Analysis: Thomas popped up on the injury report late this week with a knee injury, but it won't prevent him from suiting up for the home matchup against Denver. While he's been targeted in the passing game only three times in the past three weeks, Thomas continues to see plenty of snaps. With DJ Moore (COVID) sidelined this week, there may be a few extra targets to go around that may have otherwise gone to the wideouts.

Questionable to face Broncos
Thomas (knee) is officially listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Denver.
Analysis: Thomas didn't pop up on the injury report until Friday's practice, when he was a full participant, so it seems like he's still trending toward suiting up. Chris Manhertz likely will draw the start if Thomas were to miss time, but Carolina's tight end position simply hasn't reliably produced for fantasy this season.

Thomas didn't receive a target during Sunday's win over the Lions.

Thomas caught his only target for seven yards in Sunday's 46-23 loss to the Buccaneers.

Fumbles on lone catch
Thomas caught one of two targets for eight yards in Sunday's 33-31 loss to the Chiefs.

Thomas caught all three of his targets for 28 yards in Thursday night's 25-17 loss to the Falcons.

Another one-catch performance
Thomas caught his only target for 11 yards in Sunday's 27-24 loss to the Saints.
Analysis: Thomas' output from Sunday was right in line with his prior outings this season, as he's not yet topped two catches or 20 yards through any of Carolina's seven games. As a result, fantasy expectations for Thomas should remain low despite a favorable matchup against the Falcons in Week 8.

Makes one grab
Thomas caught his only target for nine yards in Sunday's 23-16 loss to the Bears.

No catches in Week 5
Thomas failed to catch his only target in Sunday's 23-16 win over the Falcons.
Analysis: Thomas featured for 65 percent of Carolina's offensive snaps, yet saw only one pass come his way. That low usage is nothing new for Thomas, however, as he's totaled just five catches on 10 targets for 30 yards and a touchdown through five weeks. Such a restricted role in the passing game gives Thomas minimal fantasy value.

Hauls in touchdown
Thomas caught two of five targets for five yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 31-21 win over the Cardinals.
Analysis: Thomas has now managed merely 30 receiving yards through four games, but his touchdown from two yards Sunday at least offered a glimmer of hope. He actually saw fewer snaps Sunday than fellow tight end Chris Manhertz, who finished with one catch for 17 yards. With neither option being particularly productive, Carolina's starting tight-end role hasn't meant much in fantasy terms thus far.

Catches one pass
Thomas caught one of two targets for nine yards in Sunday's 21-16 win over the Chargers.
Analysis: Thomas was unsuccessfully targeted on Carolina's first offensive play, then hauled in his only other look shortly after committing a holding penalty in the second quarter. Through three games, the tight end has managed just three grabs for 25 yards despite his regular starting role, making for a disappointing fantasy return to date.

Not targeted Sunday
Thomas was not targeted in Sunday's 31-17 loss to the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Thomas played over half of Carolina's offensive snaps, yet didn't see any of quarterback Teddy Bridgewater's 42 passing attempts come his way. On a day Bridgewater finished with 367 passing yards, Thomas' complete lack of involvement comes as a concern. The tight end will be desperate to make a larger impact in Week 3 versus the Chargers, but Sunday's goose egg sets the bar incredibly low.

Just two targets
Thomas caught both of his targets for 16 total receiving yards in Sunday's 34-30 loss to the Raiders.
Analysis: Thomas featured on two-thirds of Carolina's offensive snaps, but he hardly got involved in the team's passing game. With all but five targets going to D.J. Moore, Robby Anderson, Curtis Samuel and Christian McCaffrey, Thomas' placement down the Panthers' pecking order was well illustrated. Thomas (toe) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice, Myles Simmons of the Panthers' official site reports.
Analysis: Thomas suffered a toe injury just over a week ago, but he's already resumed operating at full capacity. He's set to serve as Carolina's top tight end during Sunday's season opener against the Raiders, though Christian McCaffrey, D.J. In line to play Week 1
Coach Matt Rhule believes Thomas (toe) will be available Week 1 versus the Raiders, Steve Reed of the Associated Press reports.
Analysis: One week removed from injuring his toe last Monday, Thomas may not be back on the field just yet, meaning Wednesday's practice will have some bearing on his ability to suit up in the opener. He doesn't have much competition for targets from position mates Chris Manhertz and Colin Thompson, but Thomas likely won't be higher than fourth in the pecking order within the Panthers offense behind Christian McCaffrey, D.J. Moore and Robby Anderson.

Next up to replace Olsen
Thomas is expected to replace Greg Olsen as the Panthers' starting tight end, ESPN.com's David Newton reports.
Analysis: The 2018 fourth-round pick already has seen plenty of playing time in the NFL, thanks in no small part to Olsen's late-career health struggles. Thomas has had his own struggles with drops (three each season) and blocking, but he's an excellent athlete -- 4.74 40-yard dash, 36-inch vertical at 259 pounds -- who will be just 24 years old for the entire 2020 campaign. Makes one grab in finale
Thomas, who caught one pass for 12 yards in Sunday's 42-10 loss to the Saints, finishes up the 2019 season with 16 receptions (on 30 targets) for 136 yards and a touchdown in 16 games played.
Analysis: Thomas saw his role expand last year after Greg Olsen went down early in the season, but he took a back seat to the veteran in 2019. That situation resulted in noticeable declines from Thomas' 36/333/2 line, but with a handful of drops as well, he didn't help his case much either. Analysis: Thomas was limited in practice to begin the week, but he now appears to have put his ankle issue behind him. Limited by ankle issue
Thomas was listed as a limited participant on Wednesday's estimated practice report due to an ankle injury, Alaina Getzenberg of The Charlotte Observer reports.
Analysis: Just like Thomas, Greg Olsen (knee) also drew a "limited" tag, but both of Carolina's top tight ends are expected to be ready to go for Sunday's game against the Saints. After starting in place of a concussed Olsen in Weeks 14 and 15, Thomas predictably saw his role decline in last weekend's loss to the Colts while Olsen returned to action. Makes two catches vs. Seahawks
Thomas caught two of four targets for 23 yards during Sunday's 30-24 loss to the Seahawks.
Analysis: Although Thomas started in the absence of Greg Olsen (concussion) in a favorable matchup on paper, he simply wasn't used often enough to make much of an impact. The lack of production was especially frustrating for fantasy managers who scooped Thomas up after he received 10 targets a week ago. Even if the second-year pro receives another starting nod next Sunday against the Colts, this outing illustrates the risk associated with starting him in fantasy lineups.

Set to start again
Thomas is poised to make another start after teammate Greg Olsen (concussion) was ruled out for Sunday's game against the Seahawks.
Analysis: Thomas took full advantage of the same opportunity last week, hauling in five of 10 targets for 57 yards and a touchdown in a 40-20 loss to the Falcons. He isn't likely to repeat that target volume, but he should get plenty of snaps against a Seattle defense that's given up the second-most receiving yards (918) to tight ends this year.

Will be part of TE committee
Interim coach Perry Fewell said the Panthers will have a committee approach at tight end Sunday in Atlanta due to the likely absence of Greg Olsen (concussion), Joe Person of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Fewell mentioned Thomas, Chris Manhertz and fullback Alex Armah as the options to cover for Olsen. Having said that, Thomas is the most likely of the trio to make an impact as a pass catcher. Thomas caught all four of his targets for 24 yards in Sunday's 29-21 loss to the Redskins.
Analysis: He entered Sunday with a mere one catch on the season, but he saw his role expand after fellow tight end Greg Olsen was concussed during the third quarter. As a result, Thomas put together his best performance of the campaign, and he figures to keep working with Carolina's starters if Olsen is unavailable in Week 14 versus the Falcons. Thomas caught one of two targets for four yards in Sunday's 34-31 loss to the Saints.
Analysis: Thomas, who hauled in 36 passes as a rookie, needed until Week 12 to make his first grab in his second season. Of course, with Greg Olsen healthy, Thomas' involvement has been scaled back significantly, but it's still surprising how little impact he's made in 2019.

Still waiting for first catch
Thomas was not targeted during Sunday's 24-16 loss to Green Bay.
Analysis: Thomas ended 2018 with 25 catches in his final five games, but the Indiana product has suffered through an intense sophomore slump. With Greg Olsen, who was out for the final month of 2018, back in the fold, Thomas has just two targets this season -- neither of them coming in the red zone. He's topped five offensive snaps just once in his last four games. With that kind of usage, Thomas should not be on your radar Sunday, even against Atlanta's 25th-ranked pass defense.
