Plays 14 games
Cannon finished the 2020 season with 10 carries for 33 yards and three catches on three targets for 16 yards in 14 games played.
Analysis: Cannon enjoyed a depth tailback and special-teams role in his first season with the Panthers. While his fantasy value should be even more limited with Christian McCaffrey (thigh) healthy next season, Cannon is under contract with Carolina through the 2021 season..

Could factor into Week 17 backfield
Panthers head coach Matt Rhule named Cannon as a candidate to mix into the team's backfield Sunday against the Saints with Christian McCaffrey (thigh) and Mike Davis (ankle) unlikely to play, Jonathan M. Alexander of The Charlotte Observer reports.
Analysis: Cannon has been active for each of the Panthers' last 11 games, but he's worked almost exclusively on special teams during that stretch, garnering a total of 13 touches (10 carries, three receptions) while playing only 37 offensive snaps. With the team's top two backs on track to sit out the season finale, more opportunities could open up for Cannon, but he'll still likely find himself behind Rodney Smith and Curtis Samuel in the pecking order for touches out of the backfield. Garners three carries
Cannon rushed three times for 17 yards in Sunday's 28-27 loss to the Vikings.
Analysis: Cannon also caught his lone target for a one-yard gain. Despite his increased involvement Sunday compared to usual, the reserve tailback holds little fantasy value and could be inactive if Christian McCaffrey returns following Carolina's bye in Week 13.

Set for backup role in Week 10
Cannon is expected to serve as the backup to Mike Davis with Christian McCaffrey (shoulder) and Reggie Bonnafon (ankle) both out Sunday against the Buccaneers, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Person mentions that Alex Armah is also an option at running back, and the team could opt to promote Rodney Smith from the practice squad. Davis has previously proven himself capable of taking on a workhorse role with McCaffrey injured, so there isn't expected to be much work left over for Cannon, who has garnered more than two touches in a game only once this season.

Garners five touches
Cannon rushed three times for 12 yards and caught both his targets for 15 yards in Sunday's 23-16 loss to the Bears.
Analysis: Cannon served as Mike Davis' backup at tailback and did decently with his handful of touches. In fact, with a long reception of 19 yards, Cannon actually outgained Davis through the air. As long as Christian McCaffrey and Reggie Bonnafon remain sidelined with ankle injuries, expect Cannon to serve behind Davis and hold very mild fantasy value.

Set for backup role
Coach Matt Rhule said Friday that Cannon will back up Mike Davis during Sunday's game against the Falcons, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Cannon looks set to serve as Carolina's No. 2 running back versus the Falcons, with Reggie Bonnafon (undisclosed) on the practice squad injured list. Fullback Alex Armah will also play a depth role in the backfield, but Cannon would likely be the primary beneficiary of increased snaps if Davis were to get nicked up.

Earns roster spot
Cannon secured a spot on the team's 53-man roster Saturday, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Cannon secured the third and final spot on the running back depth chart in the wake of the team cutting Reggie Bonnafon. Now that Cannon's on the roster, Pearson points out he likely will be on every special team play for the 2020 season. Don't expect Cannnon to produce any meaningful fantasy numbers for the upcoming campaign.

Plucked off waivers by Panthers
The Panthers claimed Cannon off waivers Tuesday, Myles Simmons of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Selected by the Jets in the sixth round of the 2018 draft, Cannon was active for all 16 games as a rookie, averaging 3.0 YPC on 38 rushes, hauling in 17 of 25 targets for 144 yards and scoring one TD. However, he was contained to one offensive snap and four appearances last season before he was placed on injured reserve Nov. 1 due to foot and ankle injuries. Cannon likely will vie with Mike Davis and Jordan Scarlett for one or two spots at the bottom of the Panthers' running back depth chart.

Let go by New York
The Jets waived Cannon on Monday, Eric Allen and Randy Lange of the team's official site report.
Analysis: Cannon was caught up in a numbers game in the backfield, as he likely would have found himself on the outside looking in for a spot on the regular-season roster after the Jets signed veteran Frank Gore in the offseason and spent a fourth-round pick on La'Mical Perine in the draft. After compiling 257 total yards and a touchdown in 2018 as a change-of-pace option, Cannon's role diminished considerably in 2019. He appeared in four games and played 58 total snaps, with only one coming on offense.

Placed on IR
The Jets placed Cannon (foot) on injured reserve Friday, Ethan Greenberg of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Cannon had missed three straight games while nursing a foot issue, and he now lands on IR due to the severity of the injury. Ty Montgomery will continue to serve as New York's top kick returner with Cannon sidelined. Cannon appeared in four games for the Jets this season, during which he logged just one offensive snap but played a key role on special teams.
