Staying with Lions
Blough agreed to re-sign with the Lions on Thursday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Blough served mainly as Detroit's No. 3 quarterback in 2021 and played just four offensive snaps during his third season with the Lions. He should continue to serve behind starter Jared Goff and primary backup Tim Boyle heading into the 2022 campaign

Remains No. 3 QB
Blough (coach's decision) is inactive for Thursday's game against the Bears.
Analysis: While dressing as the No. 2 quarterback behind starter Tim Boyle in last week's 13-10 loss to the Browns, Blough didn't see the field, even though Boyle finished with just 15 completions for 77 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions on 23 attempts (3.3 YPA). Despite leading a listless offense in his first NFL start, Boyle looks like he'll hang on to the No. 2 job for now with top quarterback Jared Goff (oblique) rejoining the lineup Thanksgiving Day after a one-game absence.

Enters game in garbage time
Blough rushed once for six yards during Sunday's 44-6 loss to the Eagles.
Analysis: Blough entered the game on the final drive after Jared Goff had fallen into a 44-point hole. With Detroit at 0-8 and Tim Boyle (thumb) still on injured reserve, it will be interesting to see if Blough gets a chance to take over the offense coming out of the Lions' Week 9 bye.

Backup role confirmed
Blough will enter the season as the No. 2 quarterback after it was determined that Tim Boyle (thumb) will undergo surgery for a broken right thumb, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
Analysis: While it's not clear if Boyle will miss the entire season, Blough is set to serve as the backup for as long as the free-agent acquisition is sidelined. When forced into action for five games with Detroit in 2019, Blough managed 5.7 yards per pass attempt with a 54 percent completion rate.

Slated for backup duties
Blough likely will take over as Jared Goff's primary backup if Tim Boyle (thumb) is forced to miss significant time, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Boyle, who started Friday's preseason finale against Indianapolis, reportedly hit his thumb on the helmet of a defensive player on the opening drive of the game. Blough took over and completed 13 of 21 passes for 117 yards with one interception and 14 rushing yards on four carries. While it's not yet clear how long Boyle may be sidelined, Blough split No. 2 duties with him all summer and will be set to handle backup duties in the interim.

Starting Friday night?
Blough appears in line for the start in Friday's preseason game against the Colts, Chris Burke of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Stephen Holder of The Athletic reports that Lions coach Dan Campbell told Colts coach Frank Reich he does not intend to play starters. With Jared Goff and others expected to sit, Blough and Tim Boyle will continue their competition for the No. 2 quarterback job. Boyle is listed second on the the team's depth chart, but the starting assignment Friday night might be a hint Blough has pushed ahead.

Making case for backup job
Blough is making a case for the backup quarterback job behind Jared Goff, Justin Rogers of The Detroit News reports.
Analysis: Tim Boyle had been the presumed backup after getting a one-year, $2.5 million deal in free agency, but Blough has given the coaching staff something to think about after seeming to perform significantly better than Boyle during the preseason. While Blough was playing against lesser competition than Boyle most of the time, it nonetheless was impressive that Blough inherited Boyle's 23-point halftime deficit Saturday and ultimately led three touchdown drives to bring Detroit within seven points…read more

Likely to remain in No. 3 role
Blough likely will remain in a No. 3 role to open the 2021 campaign, Benjamin Raven of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: The Lions let incumbent No. 2 QB Chase Daniels walk this spring, only to replace him with another high-priced backup in former Green Bay quarterback Tim Boyle. However, with Boyle only under contract for one season, Blough -- who will be a restricted free agent at the end of the league year -- could be in the mix for the backup role behind Jared Goff next summer.

Serves as third-string QB in 2020
Blough completed six of 10 passes for 49 yards with one interception in one game in 2020.
Analysis: After Blough made the Detroit roster out of training camp only to get cut in September, the Lions thought enough of the 25-year-old to sign him back to the active roster once it was known in October that the Cowboys were in the market for someone to replace Dak Prescott (knee). However, Blough went on to see action in just a single game in 2020 while serving as the No. 3 QB behind Matthew Stafford and Chase Daniel. While there's a chance he could return as the No. 2 option in 2021 should Daniel…read more

Plays three drives in blowout loss
Blough completed six of 10 passes for 49 yards and an interception while adding an 18-yard scramble in Saturday's 47-7 loss to Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Matthew Stafford hurt his ankle on the Lions' first possession and they were getting blown out with veteran backup Chase Daniel under center, so the team decided to see what it had in Blough. The 25-year-old Purdue product didn't do much of note in his three possessions, but it's possible Detroit could opt to start him over Daniel in next week's season finale against the Vikings if Stafford's unable to play.

Signs with Lions
Blough signed with the Lions' active roster Saturday.
Analysis: Blough was on the Lions' practice squad after getting cut in September, and according to Chris Burke of The Athletic, the Lions made this move because the Cowboys were looking to sign Blough. The Purdue product completed just 54 percent of his passes for 5.7 yards per attempt over five games last year. He will operate as the No. 3 quarterback behind Matthew Stafford and Chase Daniel.

Let go by Lions
Blough was waived by the Lions on Saturday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: It would have been surprising to see Blough beat out veteran Chase Daniels for the backup gig behind Matthew Stafford, but Blough evidently had a strong camp, which put him in contention for the role. He'll hit the waiver wire along with a host of other notable names at QB and could make it back through to the team's practice squad should everything work out in the Lions' favor.

Can't get going against Packers
Blough completed 12 of 29 pass attempts for 122 yards and an interception in the team's Week 17 loss to the Lions. He added one reception for 19 yards and a touchdown.
Analysis: Blough's most meaningful contribution to the game came halfway through the first quarter when he caught a 19-yard touchdown from Danny Amendola. Otherwise, he struggled to move the offense, completing only three passes of 10 yards or more. After turning in a surprising performance on Thanksgiving against the Bears, Blough completed only 72 of 136 pass attempts for 704 yards, four touchdowns and six interceptions across his last four games. Though he may have a future in the league as a backup,…read more

Absorbs four Broncos sacks
Blough completed 12 of 24 pass attempts for 117 yards and one touchdown during Sunday's 27-17 loss to Denver.
Analysis: The former Purdue Boilermaker had absorbed nine sacks over his past three outings coming into Sunday's matchup, and he was once again under duress Week 16 against the Von MIller-led Broncos pass rush, absorbing six QB hits and four sacks as Detroit dropped its 11th game in 12 tries. Blough was able to avoid committing any giveaways after establishing a 3:5 TD:INT through his first three career starts, but with another subpar showing in the yardage department, he now sits at 216.5 passing yards…read more

Set to start Week 16
Blough will start Sunday's game against Denver and could get the nod in the Dec. 29 season finale against Green Bay after the Lions placed Matthew Stafford (back/hip) on injured reserve Tuesday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Stafford had already missed the Lions' past six games, but the move to IR means he's officially been shuttered for 2019. With Jeff Driskel (hamstring) moving to IR prior to Stafford, the Lions are now down to Blough and Kyle Sloter as their available quarterbacks for the final two games. Since his surprisingly solid debut as a starter in the Thanksgiving Day loss to the Bears, Blough has struggled in back-to-back matchups, completing just 57.8 percent of his throws for 5.6 yards per attempt and…read more

Mistake-prone showing in defeat
Blough completed 24 of 43 passes for 260 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions in the Lions 38-17 loss to the 49ers on Sunday. He also rushed five times for 19 yards and committed a fumble but managed to recover it.
Analysis: The rookie did the best he could under the circumstances, as he was playing without Marvin Jones (IR, ankle) in the receiving corps and without the benefit of Bo Scarbrough (ribs) in the backfield to help keep the defense honest. Blough unsurprisingly relied heavily on Danny Amendola, with whom he connected on eight occasions for 102 yards. Blough's ability to produce fantasy-friendly production during what will be championship weekend in many leagues will be compromised by his unfriendly Week…read more

Struggles versus Vikings
Blough completed 24 of 40 pass attempts for 205 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in the team's Week 14 loss to the Vikings.
Analysis: Blough struggled to get anything going early, completing only seven of 14 passes for 59 yards in the first half. With the Lions down 17-0, he took to the air more often in the second half but threw two interceptions in the team's last four offensive possessions. On a positive note, Blough has shown the ability to keep his top receivers involved, targeting Kenny Golladay eight times and Marvin Jones seven. He'll draw an easier matchup in Week 15 when the Lions take on the Buccaneers.

In line to continue starting
Blough is expected to remain the starter until the return of Matthew Stafford (back) after backup Jeff Driskel (hamstring) was placed on injured reserve Saturday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Blough was surprisingly stout in his professional debut Thursday, carving through the Bears' defense and keeping the contest close throughout. The 24-year-old looks to be in line for more starts along the way, as Matthew Stafford doesn't seem close to a return (back) and former backup Jeff Driskel is on injured reserve, so Blough should be in line to take on the Vikings in Week 14.

Looks good in professional debut
Blough completed 22 of 38 passes for 280 yards, two touchdowns and one interception during Thursday's 24-20 loss to the Bears. He also rushed once for one yard.
Analysis: The injury to Jeff Driskel (hamstring) appears to have been a blessing in disguise for the Lions on Thanksgiving Day, as Detroit may have just found its long-term backup quarterback in Blough. Making his professional regular-season debut after going undrafted out of Purdue in 2018, Blough was ready for the moment and put the Lions on top early with a 75-yard touchdown to Kenny Golladay on the opening drive. He admittedly cooled off in the second and third quarters, but Blough nearly positioned…read more

Officially starting Thursday
The Lions have named Blough the starting quarterback for Thursday's game against the Bears.
Analysis: Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reported the news first, but the Lions have now made it official. Blough will be tabbed to fill in for Jeff Driskel, who did the same for Matthew Stafford (hip/back) in the team's previous three games before being limited by a hamstring injury this week. During preseason action with the Browns, Blough completed 58 percent of his passes for 271 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

In line for first pro start
Blough is expected to be the Lions' starting quarterback Thursday against the Bears, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: With no clear timeline in place for Matthew Stafford's (back) return and No. 2 option Jeff Driskel limited by a hamstring injury this week, the Lions will turn the offense over to the undrafted rookie from Purdue on Thanksgiving Day. It's unclear if Driskel will be inactive, or merely suit up as an emergency option, but Blough will be pressed into his first NFL action in front of a national audience. During the 2019 preseason, Blough completed 58 percent of his passes for 271 yards, two…read more

Could start if Driskel can't go
Blough is the next man up on the depth chart at quarterback for Thursday's game against the Bears with Jeff Driskel (hamstring) listed as questionable and Matthew Stafford (back) ruled out for the contest.
Analysis: The undrafted rookie out of Purdue hasn't taken any snaps during the regular season, but he could be pressed into the spotlight in a national game in the event Driskel isn't cleared to start Thanksgiving Day. Blough's only game action since entering the professional ranks came in two preseason appearances, with the 24-year-old completing 58 percent of his passes for 271 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Getting some first-team reps
Blough received reps with the first-team offense Tuesday, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: The Lions are preparing for all scenarios, one of them being without both Matthew Stafford (back) and Jeff Driskel (hamstring) on Thursday against the Bears. A decision on Driskel may come down to the wire Thursday as Lions-Bears kicks off at 12:30 p.m. ET. Blough's sole action as a pro occurred during the preseason, when he completed 58 percent of his passes for 271 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
