Joins Giants' practice squad
Hilliman cleared waivers and signed with the Giants' practice squad on Monday, Art Stapleton of The Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Hilliman was considered a strong candidate to land on the practice squad after getting waived by the Giants on Friday. The undrafted rookie out of Rutgers started at running back in Thursday's loss to the Patriots due to Saquon Barkley (ankle) and Wayne Gallman (concussion) being sidelined. The team hopes to have both back in Week 7, which means Hilliman will have to wait for another opportunity.

Waived after fumble
The Giants waived Hilliman on Friday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: The undrafted rookie out of Rutgers filled in as the Giants' starting running back in Thursday's 35-14 loss to the Patriots, finishing with 35 yards and a lost fumble on 13 touches. With Hilliman no longer on the roster, Javorius Allen has been signed to provide depth behind Saquon Barkley (ankle) and Wayne Gallman (concussion). The Giants hope to have both Barkley and Gallman available for Week 7 against Arizona.

Key fumble in spot start
Hilliman rushed 11 times for 38 yards and secured both of his targets for minus-3 yards in the Giants' 35-14 loss to the Patriots on Thursday. He also lost a fumble.
Analysis: The rookie drew the start with both Saquon Barkley (ankle) and Wayne Gallman (concussion) inactive, but he didn't receive a very hefty workload with the game script turning against the ground attack in the second half. Hilliman also didn't help his cause with a fumble after a fourth-quarter catch, one that was forced by Jamie Collins and scooped up and returned by Kyle Van Noy for a 22-yard touchdown with 8:33 remaining. That extended the Patriots' lead to 28-14 after New England had turned the…read more

Gets starting nod Thursday
Hilliman will start Thursday's contest at New England, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
Analysis: With Saquon Barkley (ankle) and Wayne Gallman (concussion) ruled out in advance of this contest, the Giants were expected to throw Hilliman into the fire. The offense also is without two additional pass catchers in Sterling Shepard (concussion) and Evan Engram, so the game plan could tilt in the direction of the backfield with rookie Daniel Jones at the helm against a ferocious Pats defense. Hilliman's sole competitors for reps are fullback Elijhaa Penny and recently promoted undrafted rookie…read more

Week 6 starter
Hilliman is on pace to start Thursday at New England after both Saquon Barkley (ankle) and Wayne Gallman (concussion) were ruled out for the contest.
Analysis: Hilliman doesn't have a great opportunity to take advantage of the elevated role, facing a Patriots defense that ranks third against the run (78 yards per game) and first in scoring (6.8 points per contest) by a considerable margin. Though he's had a regular role in the Daniel Jones-led offense the past two games, Hilliman has averaged just 2.8 yards per carry on his 19 rushes.

Looks in line for Week 6 start
Hilliman could handle starting duties Thursday against the Patriots with the Giants' top two running backs -- Saquon Barkley (ankle) and Wayne Gallman (concussion) -- both looking unlikely to play in the contest, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Heading into the Week 6 matchup, HIlliman and fullback Elijhaa Penny are the lone healthy options in the backfield. The Giants will likely elevate Austin Walter from the practice squad to bolster their depth at the position, but Hilliman projects to shoulder most of the load at running back if both Barkley and Gallman are sidelined. While the enhanced role aids Hilliman's outlook, his poor efficiency (2.8 YPC on 19 totes this season) and underdeveloped pass-catching skills hinder his fantasy…read more

Underwhelms after Gallman exit
Hilliman carried nine times for 20 yards and caught one of two targets for an additional four yards during Sunday's 28-10 loss to the Vikings.
Analysis: Hilliman stepped into a larger role after the departure of Wayne Gallman (concussion), leading the team in carries and rushing yardage. He underwhelmed despite receiving double-digit touches for the second week in a row, averaging just 2.2 yards per carry against a tough Vikings defense. Hilliman would presumably lead the backfield in touches Thursday against the Patriots if Gallman is forced to sit out, with Saquon Barkley (ankle) still working his way back from his own injury.

Receives 10 carries, loses fumble
Hilliman carried 10 times for 33 yards and lost a fumble during Sunday's 24-3 win over the Redskins.
Analysis: Hilliman served as Wayne Gallman's top backup in this one after failing to record a carry through the first three games. Unfortunately, his debut didn't go quite as well as he would've liked, as he averaged a mere 3.3 yards per carry and fumbled deep in Washington territory in the third quarter. Still, Hilliman could have a role to play with Saquon Barkley (ankle) sidelined and will look to improve his efficiency next Sunday at home against the Vikings.

Added to Giants' roster
The Giants signed Hilliman off their practice squad Thursday, Michael Eisen of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: He'll assume the roster spot of receiver Russell Shepard (foot), who was placed on injured reserve in a corresponding move. With top back Saquon Barkley (ankle) on tap for a multi-week absence, Hilliman will tentatively slot in as the No. 2 option in the backfield while Wayne Gallman ascends atop the depth chart. Gallman will likely see the lion's share of the touches Sunday against Washington, but expect Hilliman to at least dress for the contest and carve out a small role on offense.

Likely to be promoted to active roster
The Giants are likely to promote Hilliman to their active roster this week, Ralph Vacchiano of SportsNet New York reports.
Analysis: Coach Pat Shurmur is still searching for long-term solutions to fill in for Saquon Barkley (ankle), but Hilliman is currently the most convenient option to back up Wayne Gallman after spending the offseason and training camp with the team before shifting to its practice squad for the regular season. Hilliman, an undrafted rookie, was mildly productive in his final year at Rutgers, generating 4.1 yards per carry and six scores over 12 games.
